Excursion description

On this trip we will begin by visiting the “Orbicular Granite” Nature Sanctuary, which protects a 375 m2 field of an extraordinary geological manifestation that gives life to a spectacular exhibition of intrusive plutonic igneous rocks that cut an enormous mass of granitic rock formed in Jurassic times, an intrusion that during its formation process some crystals encapsulated others (pyroxene and plagioclase) or, in simpler terms, magmas that, slowly cooled, crystallized one within the other, giving rise to a phenomenon extremely extraordinary geological to be observed on the surface of the earth's crust. Immediately afterwards we will visit the Stone Zoo Natural Site or Wind Museum, which is one of the largest taffoni fields in the world, where wind erosion has given extraordinary animal shapes to granite rocks exposed for millions of years.

Subsequently, we will go to the “Quebrada de las Pinturas” pictoglyphs, which through 51 panels with around 124 anthropomorphic, zoomorphic and geometric motifs that represent the activity of the time, and to this one in particular as a probable pilgrimage site. and ceremonial of ancient inhabitants of Atacama, from around 2,000 years ago, highlighting among them the “sacrificer”, a magical-religious icon of the Andean culture, and then continuing towards the famous Atacama Dunes, geological structures formed by strong winds that For thousands of years they accumulated enormous sand deposits, where we can see the core of Cerro Medanoso, the highest dune in Chile (1,643 mosl), being able to explore it from the base to the summit.
